Northfield Retirement Community Offers Family Caregiver Support Groups
Northfield Retirement Community (NRC) will be hosting Caregiver Support Groups, a series of gatherings designed to help caregivers let go of stress, support loved ones and find ways to care for themselves in the process. The sessions are designed to be safe places to share with one another and learn helpful tips on how to juggle a caregiver role with other responsibilities during the holidays.
The groups will meet for five sessions on Thursdays before the holidays – November 8, 15 and 29; and December 6 and 13 at the following sites:
- Noon–12:45 p.m. – St. Olaf College, Buntrock Commons, Room 145A
- 4:30–5:30 p.m. – Northfield Retirement Community, Buckeye Conference Room
- 6–7 p.m. – Northfield Senior Center, Room 106
Author, educator and expert on caregiving for older adults Kari Berit, MS – who will facilitate the groups – said, “Don’t let this holiday season be filled with extra caregiving stress. Join us on Thursdays.”
Berit noted that a part of gaining caregiver support is becoming aware that you are a caregiver and recognizing your needs as a caregiver. “Family caregivers may be adult children, friends, spouses or relatives of the person receiving care,” she said. “The care recipient may or may not be living with the caregiver; may be greatly independent with some needs as he or she is aging; may be temporarily dependent after an episode, such as a fall; or may be growing increasingly frail and dependent on his or her loved one. Anyone in a caregiving situation is encouraged to attend our support group.”
The Family Caregiver Support Groups are part of a family caregiver support group project funded by a $15,000 grant awarded to Northfield Retirement Community by the Mardag Foundation. No reservations are necessary for the support groups. For more information, contact Ingrid Anderson Sampo at 507-664-3471 or isampo@northfieldretirement.org.
