NRC Hosts 5th Annual Walk to Remember

Northfield Retirement Community (NRC) recently announced details for its 5th Annual Walk to Remember event, taking place on Sunday, September 16, from 1-3:30 p.m. at the NRC campus. The event is held in conjunction with the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, the nation’s largest such event, held in more than 600 communities nationwide. Alzheimer’s disease is the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death.

The event is designed to generate both awareness and financial support for Alzheimer’s care and research. Walk to Remember participants will walk on NRC’s LifeTrail path system, a fitness-oriented trail designed to help NRC residents achieve their fitness goals. The event is set up so that community members, friends, staff, residents and family members all walk for the Northfield Retirement Community team. Dollars are raised through donations and sponsorships.

“Having one giant, single-minded group walking to support research for Alzheimer’s is really powerful,” said Emily Kerling, NRC Home Care Manager and RN, who is certified in dementia care. Kerling, who is has coordinated the event for the past five years, continued, “Our goals for the event are two-fold: one, we of course want to raise as much money as possible to support Alzheimer’s care and research. But, as importantly, we also want to educate people about the disease, what to look for, and about care and treatment options.”

NRC offers memory care housing and services for individuals with dementia, Alzheimer’s and other related disorders. NRC President and CEO Kyle Nordine said, “This event is very personal to us here at NRC. We know the impact Alzheimer’s can have on individuals and their families. But tremendous progress has also been made in the treatment of dementia and Alzheimer’s and we will – along with the Alzheimer’s Association – continue to work for a world without Alzheimer’s.”

Participants should meet at the NRC Chapel for registration at 1 p.m. on Sunday, September 16. For more information about individual or group participation, please contact Emily Kerling at 507-664-7353 or ekerling@northfieldretirement.org.
