NRC Hosts 6th Annual Walk to Remember

Northfield Retirement Community (NRC) has announced details for its 6th Annual Walk to Remember event, which will be held on Sunday, September 15, from 1:00–3:30 p.m. at the NRC campus.

The event is held in conjunction with the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, the nation’s largest such event, held in more than 600 communities nationwide.

The event is designed to generate both awareness and financial support for Alzheimer’s care and research. Walk to Remember participants will walk on NRC’s Life Trail™ path system, a fitness-oriented trail designed to help NRC residents achieve their fitness goals. The event is set up so that community members, friends, staff, residents and family members all walk for the NRC team. Dollars are raised through donations and sponsorships.

SONY DSCEmily Kerling said, “We really enjoy walking together as one big team. It makes the walk more supportive and creates a powerful unity among participants.” Kerling is the NRC Home Care Manager and an RN, and she has coordinated the event for the past six years. She continued, “The walk is important for many reasons. It raises funds to support Alzheimer’s care and research – something that is a high priority because Alzheimer’s is the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. The event also prompts educational discussions, informing people about the disease, what to look for, and care and treatment options. In addition, the walk serves as bonding time for family and friends of those who are affected by Alzheimer’s.”

NRC offers memory care housing and services for individuals with dementia, Alzheimer’s and other related disorders. NRC President and CEO Kyle Nordine said, “At NRC, we confront Alzheimer’s on a daily basis and witness first-hand the challenges that the disease presents. We also know that there are advances being made in treatment and we walk because we want to be a part of pushing these advances forward aggressively.”

SONY DSCThose interested in participating should meet at the NRC Chapel for registration at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 15. For more information about individual or group participation, please contact Emily Kerling at 507-664-7353 or ekerling@northfieldretirement.org.
