Northfield's 2014 Walk to Remember Benefits Walk to End Alzheimer's

Northfield Retirement Community (NRC) will be hosting Northfield's Walk to Remember event, to be held on Sunday, September 21, from 1:00–3:00 p.m. starting at the NRC campus.

The community event is held in conjunction with the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, the nation’s largest such event, held in more than 600 communities nationwide.

The walk is designed to generate awareness and financial support for Alzheimer’s care and research. NRC is hosting the event, which is a community-based walk set up by committee members from many groups in the Northfield area. Walk to Remember participants will begin at NRC, walk to Odd Fellows Park, and then return to NRC.

Participants may walk alone or with family and friends. All walkers are encouraged to offer a cash donation to the cause. Dollars are raised through donations and sponsorships.

Emily Kerling, RN and director of health services at NRC's Northfield Parkview, said, “This event has the power to bring together an entire community to honor our loved ones and stand up for hope. It is a special event."
Kerling continued, "Alzheimer’s is the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. Not only does the walk raise critical funds that support Alzheimer’s care and research, but it prompts educational discussions, informing people about the disease, what to look for, and care and treatment options. This awareness is key to getting those who develop Alzheimer's the assistance they need."

NRC President and CEO Kyle Nordine said, “This year, we are excited to expand our family of support and host the first-ever Northfield Walk to Remember. Alzheimer’s is something we need to talk about. On a daily basis we at NRC see how it affects so many individuals. We walk to celebrate the wonderful people with Alzheimer's that we have known and currently know, and to actively be a part of the advances for treatment.” NRC offers memory care housing and services for individuals with dementia, Alzheimer’s and other related disorders.
