Northfield’s 2016 Walk to Remember Benefits Alzheimer’s Association

Walk Marks Final Event in Alzheimer’s Education and Awareness Series

Northfield’s Walk to Remember will take place on Sunday, September 25, rain or shine, on the Northfield Retirement Community campus (901 Cannon Valley Drive). The event will raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer's care, support and research. Registration will begin at 1:00 p.m., with the walk kicking off at 2:00 p.m. All walkers and supporters are invited to refuel at a post-walk celebration featuring a shredded beef sandwich and live entertainment from The WhiteSidewalls – a 1950s and 1960s rock ‘n’ roll band. Teams or individuals can register on Eventbrite and are encouraged to make a donation. All donations will go directly to the Alzheimer’s Association. For more information or to register, visit northfieldwalktoremember.com or call Emily Kerling at 507-664-7353.

This family-friendly event is held in conjunction with the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s, the nation’s largest such event, held in more than 600 communities. It is designed for people of all ages. There will be two walking routes – a one-mile route and a two-mile route. Participants may walk alone or on a team with friends, family members or co-workers. All participants are encouraged to register online.

NRC President and CEO Kyle Nordine said, “Walk to Remember is a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness and funds for a disease that impacts more than 5 million Americans. It’s important that, as a community, we continue to learn more about the disease and how we can care for individuals with Alzheimer’s to ensure that Northfield continues to put into place supports that make it a dementia-friendly community.”

This year’s event marks the ninth annual Northfield Walk to Remember and the final event in a series of three Alzheimer’s education and awareness events that NRC has hosted over the past few weeks. In case of rain, festivities will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church (1321 North Avenue). On August 30, NRC hosted the University of Minnesota’s Dr. Joseph E. Gaugler for the first event in the series, which explored Alzheimer’s and the technology that supports aging adults suffering from the disease. He also informed of a study that he is conducting through the University of Minnesota School of Nursing and Center on Aging on the effectiveness of a remote health monitoring system.

NRC will host Barbara Speedling, author of “Why Is Grandma Screaming?: A Practical Guide to Improving Quality of Life in Long Term Care” and quality of life specialist at Innovations for Quality Living, on Saturday, September 24. She will discuss supporting senior independence and enhanced quality of life at home. The conversation will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church (1321 North Avenue) at 9:00 a.m. and will explore what the Northfield community can do to support aging well. It is free with no RSVP required to attend.
